N’East APC, Adamawa lawmakers disagree over Nyako’s removal

The National Vice Chairman (North East) of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Babachir Lawal, has said while the party is challenging the removal of Governor Murtala Nyako in court, it was equally preparing for early elections in Adamawa State.

Lawal, who also described Nyako's removal as illegal and self-serving, said the party was also preparing to present a formidable candidate to contest the governorship election scheduled to hold in 90 days.

Lawal said this while addressing a press conference in Abuja, on Thursday.

He explained that the action of the 19 members of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, supported by federal might, removed a constitutionally elected governor, thereby plunging the state into a state of utter despair.

But the Majority Leader of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Mr. Adamu Kamale dismissed allegations by the APC.

He said those criticizing the House for taking the action it took should look at the facts before rushing to make conclusions.

Kamale said, "Let those making allegations of wrong doing against the House bring whatever evidence they have against us. Why did the former governor Murtala Nyako refuse to appear before the panel, he should have appeared to defend himself?

"Those now trying to drag the Presidency into this should recall that Nyako himself said the President had no hand in it. So, why are people trying to drag the President into this?

"Has anyone said all the 20 allegations of wrong doing levelled against the former governor are not true? We should stick to the issues. The resources of the people of Adamawa were filtered away by one man and members of his family. We have to get justice for them."

But while condemning Nyako's impeachment by members of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, the APC chieftain said the lawmakers had renounced all claims to being true representatives of the people.

He described the drama which surrounded the process as a demonstration of mercantilism and inordinate, senseless ambition in politics.

Lawal argued that much as members of the ruling party would want to deny it, the illegal impeachment was clinically executed mainly with the 2015 elections in mind.

The vice chairman alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party was desirous of having an incumbent PDP governor in the state during the 2015 elections.

"The Speaker has now gotten himself sworn in as the Acting Governor-inordinate ambition achieved; the Deputy Speaker might soon elevate himself to Speaker-also inordinate ambition achieved; ditto the rest. The progression will be endless." Lawal said.

Lawal said the APC was still at a loss as to how the President could condone and even assist such a brazen disregard of due process, rule of law and blatant violation of the nation's constitution which all the dramatis personae have sworn to uphold.
