The Nigeria Copyright Commission (NCC) has seized illegal broadcast equipment valued at N30 million within Onitsha and Awka in Anambra State.

The items seized included hundreds of decoders, boasters, rolls of installation cable wire, cable joiners and other equipment used to facilitate illegal broadcasting of DSTV and other copyright owners' signals in the pay-per-view television.

Briefing newsmen in Onitsha on Tuesday, the Zonal Manager of NCC, Mr Emeka Ogbonna, noted that the huge success of the massive clamp-down was an indication of the commission's renewed commitment to its regulatory and enforcement mandate.

Ogbonna said that illegal broadcast pirates would never have Onitsha or any part of Anambra as a safe haven.

"With the recent raid, we have succeeded in bring down 90 percent transmission of illegal broadcast in Anambra.

"We carried out a massive raid on Wednesday and Thursday last week and made unprecedented seizure of illegal broadcasting equipment as directed by the Director-General of NCC, Mr Afam Ezekude.

"The raid was done house-to-house within Onitsha areas of Awada, Okpoko, 33, Upper Iweka as well as Awka areas of Works Roads, Zik Avenue etc.

"Our surveillance officers and monitoring agents are still combing all nook and crannies of the state to mop-up the remaining 10 percent", he said.

He noted that the commission was pursing its zero tolerance to piracy with total commitment; notwithstanding its limitation in terms of funding.

Ogbonna, however, urged all stakeholders in the creative industries to fully support the ongoing national Copyright Protection and Anti-Piracy Campaign.

He advised the illegal operators and those who patronize them to desist from the illegal business "since the long-arm of the law would definitely catch them.

"We would continue the enforcement, which had become a big source of enlightenment and awareness creation.

"We would not relent in our efforts no matter those involved; we would not fail to prosecute anybody found in the act", he said.
