Not fewer than 735 children were reported to have died as a result of lead poisoning in Zamfara State within three years.

This was disclosed by the project coordinator of Medicine San Frontiers (MSF), Ms Danielle Wellington, while delivering her address at a town hall meeting in Gusau, at the weekend.

According to the coordinator, MSF came to the state in March 2010 and immediately embarked on treatment of children affected by lead poisoning.

She maintained that within three years of its operation in the state, it had registered 5,395 children in its clinics.

She added that out of this number, 2,040 children had been treated, 735 died and 1,450 children currently receiving treatment.

Wellington disclosed that at the end of the year, MSF would be winding its operations in the state and implored civil society and the media to mount pressure on the Federal Government to intensify measures in taking over from them.
