Doctors’ strike paralyses services in Ondo hospitals

Medical officers in public hospitals in Ondo State today joined their colleagues nationwide to embark on the ongoing strike.

The development has almost paralyzed activities in government health facilities.

It was observed that patients with serious condition had already been
discharged before the commencement of the strike.

According to the Chief Medical Director (CMD)of the State Specialist Hospital, Akure, Dr Adeniran Ikuomola, the management took the decision to reduce the suffering of the patients while those still on admission are those whose cases could be handled by nurses.

At the Hospital, nurses were seen operating, while doctors did not report for duties in compliance
with the directive of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA)

Some nurses who spoke in confidence said they had been doing the job expected of them, stressing that no doctor had shown up for duty because of the ongoing nationwide strike.

At the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, the situation was also the same as resident doctors abandoned wards while nurses were at their duty posts attending to patients.

The Medical Director of the State Specialist Hospital, Akure, Dr Ikuomola said the entire doctors in the hospital had joined their colleagues on strike.

He said management workers on duty restricted themselves to
administrative functions as they refused to perform all clinical duties.

Dr Ikuomola said his pleadings for skeletal services were resisted because the Medical Association
had threatened to sanction any person that tries to sabotage the struggle.

He however said the strike would not last before it is resolved so that patients would not suffer for long.
