Doctors Strike: NMA in closed-door meeting, takes decision today

The Nigerian Medical Association will today (Tuesday) announce the outcome of its Emergency Delegates Meeting about the ongoing strike.

The PUNCH learnt on Monday evening that members of the association had embarked on a marathon meeting where important decisions concerning the health sector would be discussed.

As early as 8am, journalists had laid ambush on major hotels and conference centres to ascertain the venue of the EDM.

But the venue of the meeting was kept as a secret as the NMA leadership would not reveal it.

Several calls and text messages to the President of NMA, Dr. Kayode Obembe, to ascertain whether it was for fear of arrest by security agencies that prompted the secret meeting were not replied.

But our correspondent was informed that the meeting commenced by 6pm on Monday and would end on Tuesday morning

As of the time of filing this report, the NMA had commenced its closed-door meeting, while the venue remained a top secret.

However, our correspondent received a short message service from the National Headquarters of NMA on Monday evening inviting journalists to a press briefing scheduled for 11am today.

The Federal Government had on Friday expressed optimism that the strike action by NMA would be called off yesterday (Monday) at the end of the association EDM.

"I also want to remind all health workers that the ethics of their professions dictates that at all times emergency care must not be denied to those that need them. I thank you all," the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, told journalists while conveying government's update on the strike."

PUNCH.
