Confusion as Judge postpones verdict on sacked Ondo Poly workers

There was anxiety today at Akure National Industrial Court, Ondo Stat as court adjourned the ruling on sacked Ondo Polytechnic workers till July 24. The suit was filed by 32 sacked workers of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo against the institution's management.

The Presiding Judge, Anthonia Ubaka had earlier fixed July 3, (today) as the day for the judgment but the workers were all shocked as the judge pronounced another day, July 24, for the final verdict.

According to Ubaka, the ruling was adjourned since she was not ready with her judgment.

However, the embattled workers, who stormed the court with some of the national executive leaders of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) were worried over the delay in the judgment.

Some of them burst into tears as they were confused on what would have caused the delay in the judgement but later expressed hope that the ruling would be fair.

The 32 sacked workers had been battling in the law court since March last year over the termination of their appointments by the institution's authority.

They are praying the court to reinstate them, stressing that they were laid off without genuine reason.

But the management said they were sacked because the institution needed to be re-organised and their services were no longer required.

Earlier in the court yesterday, the counsel to the RUGIPO Management, Dr. Olumide Ayeni, who was represented by Chidera Ogbe argued that since the organization was established, the government does not make every employment under it to have statutory favour.

But the Claimants Counsel, Femi Falana, who was represented by Gabriel Omoedu said they would file additional address in respect of the fresh application raised by the defendant.

The Judgement has now been fixed for July 24 by Justice Ubaka.
