THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Niger State, has announced that political parties, civil societies organisations and security agencies in the state have agreed that the commission should  conduct the  bye-election for Niger East senatorial district  on Saturday, August 16, 2014.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Dr Emmanuel Onucheyo, stated this on Friday, during a stakeholders meeting, where the commission proposed the date.

"The state office has proposed Saturday, August 16, 2014 for the bye election," he said.

Onucheyo further explained that by law,  notice of the election would be made public not later than 14 days to the election, adding that the National Assembly informed the commission of  Senator Dahiru Awaisu Kuta's death on July 17, 2014.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner said the tenure of the current Assembly expires in June, 2015, saying that "Section 76 of 1999 constitution mandates the commission to conduct bye election to fill this vacant seat, within one month, from date of formal notification"

He also quoted section 79 of the 1999 constitution to buttress his point and urged the stakeholders to sensitise their eligible voters and work towards credible election.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr Tanko Beji, acting chairman of the Niger State's chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) appealed to INEC to organise more stakeholders meeting to sensitise them before the election.

Similarly, the state's Chairman,  National Conscience Party  (NCP),  Malam Abdulazeez Salaudeen, moved the motion to adopt the resolution at the meeting while Alhaji Kabiru Ibrahim, who is also  the  state's  chairman of Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN) seconded the motion.

It will be recalled that the late Senator Dahiru Awaisu Kuta, representing Niger East Senatorial District on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the National Assembly died in Lagos on June 12, 2014 following a protracted illness.
