The Benin Electricity Distribution Company said that it has arrested a business district manager and seven staff in Ondo and Delta States for defrauding customers while discharging their duties.

In a press statement signed by the Executive Director, Commercial, of the company, Abu Ejoor, and made available to newsmen in Benin said that the arrest was carried out to warn other members of staff.

The allegations, Ejoor said, included diversion of cash collected from customers meant for paying their bills, issuance of  fake receipts to customers and deliberate non-distribution of bills to customers in order to extort money.

The suspects were said to have charged unsuspecting customers who wanted a disconnection from the company's network with dubious fees like registration fees, processing fees, which ranged from N3000 to N5000. Such a service, he noted, was supposed to be free.

According to him the suspects also engaged in illegal reconnection of disconnected customers, and also arranged fixed monthly payments without due process, which went to their own pockets.

The business district manager was said to have collected money to energise transformers donated to some communities in Ondo State.

The executive director stated that six arrested staff from the Ozoro Service Unit in Ughelli, Delta State were invited for investigation after complaints and showed non-reflection of cash collected from electricity consumers.

He explained that one of the affected staff fled from the Benin City office during investigations.

"We frown at any unwholesome attitude of our staff.

"We got video and voice evidence against these staff and one of them that committed the act ran  away while he was undergoing interrogation," the executive director said.
