Ezekwesili, who is one of the leaders of the #BringBackOurGirls campaign, claimed, via her Twitter handle, @obyezeks Monday morning that she was briefly detained and her passport withheld but later released, as she tried to travel through the Abuja Airport to London for a scheduled engagement.
But the SSS spokesperson, Maryln Ogar, while responding to questions at the National Information Centre, Abuja, explained that Ezekwesili, who was on her way to London as at the time of the briefing, was subjected to the same security protocol that every other person underwent at the airport
She said: "Statutorily, the SSS clears all passengers that travel outside this country or come into this country. Oby Ezekwesili went through the same protocol that every other person undergoes at the airport. But because she wanted popularity, she decided to create a scene. We don't want to make her popular; she is very unpopular.
"Let people stop to aggregate to themselves unnecessary importance when we have serious security challenges in our hands. Security issues must not be short-changed for any reason".
Also, the coordinator of the NIC, Mike Omeri, berated Mrs Ezekwsili, saying her action was akin to ridiculing the country before the international community.
"Because you have access to social network, the next thing is to tweet that you have been detained by the DSS. I think this kind of thing is wrong; it is deadly. Why are we ridiculing our country?" he asked.
Omeri, who doubles as the DG, National Orientation Agency, cautioned people against creating unnecessary problems just because they were no longer occupying public office.
"Why is it that people who have had opportunity to rule this country at the highest level will now subject this country to ridicule simply because they have a matter to settle with people in government or because presently they are not in government?
"If this Boko Haram thing is finished and Nigeria remains, and they find themselves in government again, is this how they expect to be treated? Or what would they do to the country they have so destroyed?" he asked.
