As part of efforts to bring infant and maternal mortality rate in the state to zero level, the Ondo State Government has commenced skill acquisition training programme for traditional birth attendants and mission birth attendants, popularly known as Agbebis in the state.

Some of the programmes include; Hat/Bead making, Liquid/Solid soap making, Izal making and catering.

It will be recalled that Governor Olusegun Mimiko, had in December 2013, disclosed that the state government will give loans to traditional birth attendants in the state to quit midwifery and embark on other profitable ventures.

Speaking at the flag-off of the skill acquisition programme in Akure South Local Government Area, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Dayo Adeyanju said skill acquisition for traditional birth attendants and mission birth attendants became necessary because the government wanted them to quit midwifery and be gainfully engaged in other ventures.

"What we are trying to do is, if we are saying they should refer, that means they will be jobless and have nothing to do.

"The Governor has mandated that since they do not have business in delivery anymore, we have to create another opportunity for them so as to empower them in ensuring they have something to do" Adeyanju stated.

The Commissioner also disclosed that after the training, the state government will provide a micro-credit loan for them to start their new business.

He said the rationale behind this is that the Ondo State Government wants to maintain its zero tolerance for maternal deaths in the state.

He further stated that "any traditional or mission birth attendants caught after this will be sanctioned as government has given a leverage to exit the job"

Adeyanju said "the bottom line is that we want to secure our tomorrow, children and pregnant mothers."

No fewer than 100 women had benefitted from the skill acquisition programme.
