Former Governor of Bayelsa State, Timpriye Sylva has accused the Federal Government of neglecting the Niger-Delta region.

Sylva also accused President Goodluck Jonathan of destroying the unity of Niger-Deltans because of his ambition.

Sylva stated this when he led a group of the All Progressives Congress, APC, supporters on a courtesy visit to Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi in Port Harcourt.

While describing Amaechi as one of the most courageous politicians in the country, Sylva criticized the Federal Government for persecuting him.

The former of Governor of Bayelsa State also noted that the emergence of the APC has provided a credible platform for change in the country.

According to him, "We are here on a party function. The APC has provided a very credible platform for progressives' to come together and sweep away the corruption and ineptitude of the Government of the day.

"One of the things that brought problems between you and the Federal Government was because you were able to point to the fact that even the East-West road, which is a major link in the South-South has been neglected by this government. They have decided to fight you".

He continued, "Today, we in the Niger-Delta have the presidency of this country. What has the presidency of this region brought to us; it has brought division. In fact, it has put a crack on the unity in the Niger-Delta.

"That is why today, we of the APC from Bayelsa state decided to come to you, to solidarize with you and to tell you that not everybody in Bayelsa State is against progress", Sylva said.

Meanwhile, Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has indicted politicians in the country stressing that they lacked character and respect for the needs of the masses.

Amaechi also took a swipe at politicians, accusing them of betraying the trust of the people.

He said, "It is a lesson we need to learn that there are very few Nigerians with character among the elites. The only character the elites have is money and power. It is important we realize that character is an essential element to good governance.

"You can't see a man who has betrayed his friends and then say make him Governor or make him Deputy".

The Rivers State Governor maintained that the only way to stabilize democracy was to ensure a trust-worthy successor generation.

Governor Amaechi also urged loyalists of the All Progressives Congress to focus on the overall objective of the party, which is nation building and good governance.

"For my brothers and sisters in a great party, it is a party. We can't afford to quarrel. We must always reach compromises to enable us win and those conflicts of ideas can lead to so many things. What is important is that the interest of Nigerians should supersede that of our personal interest.

"That you are coming from the state of the President, the party at the national level should give you support because it takes courage and strength of character to say this is where I identify myself".

Amaechi promised to support Sylva as he battles President Jonathan's Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Bayelsa State come 2015.
