Champions League Review: United, Barcelona dumped out; Atletico, Bayern progress

Manchester United's season ended on Wednesday, after they were kicked out of the UEFA Champions League by Bayern Munich.

The Red Devils, who welcomed Wayne Rooney back into the squad, took the lead in the second half, after Patrice Evra's fine volley found the top corner. The home side were level within 22 seconds, with Franck Ribery providing a cross for Mario Mandzukic to nod past David De Gea.

Pep Guardiola's men stretched the lead through Thomas Muller, who guided Rafinha's cross past a stranded De Gea. Arjen Robben ensured the tie was over as a contest, with a fine run and finish via a deflection.

Koke's goal was all Atletico Madrid needed to eliminate La Liga rivals Barcelona, from this season's Champions League.

Diego Simeone's men were the better team all game long and should have won by a comfortable margin. But a combination of good goalkeeping from Pinto, the woodwork and profligacy ensured that a 1-0 win was all they got at home against the former Champions.

Bayern Munich and Atletico join Real Madrid and Chelsea in the pot for the semi-final draws on Friday by 11am.
